How to Reduce the Risk of Falling Pallets and Cartons!

How to Reduce the Risk of Falling Pallets and Cartons!

In most warehouses and industrial facilities, pallets racks are often stuffed with pallets and heavy items. Unfortunately, sometimes these pallets fall off, damaging things on which they land, also injuring those working on the floor. Is there any way to stop pallets from falling and preventing damage? Yes, there are. A lot many pallets drop because of the way they have been loaded and stored. Simply storing the pallets in the right manner can make a huge difference.

1.Keep enough lateral space between pallet racks
If pallets are kept too close, it becomes difficult for forklifts to access the products. This increases the likelihood of the driver bumping the truck in an adjacent rack leading to pallet or rack falls. According to the industry standards, the beam should be just greater than the maximum total width plus 12”. Don’t hold back on the extra space as it will prevent the driver from hitting the pallet or rack.

2.Have sufficient lighting system in the warehouse
Insufficient lighting can contribute to errors and result in improper stacking of pallets on racks. Utilize modern lighting systems to light rack aisles. It will illuminate the shelf effectively and make the warehouse workspace safer. Efficient lighting reduces the number of accidents and have a huge impact on the productivity of employees.

3.Avoid dilapidated pallets
Make sure you use good quality pallets that are rated to handle the unit loads. Avoid using pallets that have come apart as the outcome could be pallet rack collapses, which could prove disastrous for those working on the floor.

4.Store heaviest items on the lower bays
The heaviest items should be stored on the lower bays of the racks. This will not just make the racks more stable but will also make loading and unloading errors at the top less critical.

5.Train the drivers
Forklift drivers need to be trained for better handling of the products – maneuvering the forklift between the aisles for appropriate loading/unloading to reduce the chances of product falling.
